The emerald ash borer, also known by the acronym EAB, is a beetle that feeds on ash tree species. Females lay eggs in bark crevices on ash trees, and larvae feed underneath the bark of ash trees. If ash trees go untreated, they will die in one-two seasons after the EAB has taken root. Unfortunately, there are no natural controls for EAB. But EAB treatments, when properly administered by a licensed tree professional, are 90% effective.

Does My Ash Tree Have EAB?
Look for the following signs:
- Tree canopy thinning & crown dieback
- Aggressive trunk sprouting
- Wood pecker damage
- Bark falling off the tree
- Wavy trail lines under the bark
The EAB is small enough to fit on a penny, so you are unlikely to get a chance to examine one individually. But if you do, the adult EAB is identifiable by its dark, metallic-green color and coppery-red or purple abdomen, which can be seen under its wings.
Treatment Plan
We treat EAB with insecticide via trunk injection. An advantage of trunk injections is that they can be used on sites where soil treatments may not be practical, effective, or appropriate. This includes trees growing in excessively wet, sandy, compacted, or restricted soil environments. Trunk injections generally involve drilling through the bark and into the outer sapwood at the base of the ash tree. Products applied as trunk injections are typically absorbed and transported within the tree.
